Has Woodbridge become a destination? Outlet malls have shown up all over now. My question is how? The centerpiece is an outlet mall. They have suggested that they want to make Arundel Mills a destination. The Cordish companies realizing the competition from the Shoe and MGM will have to find ways to get people to Arundel Mills. Both will lose some market share to MGM unfortunately. It will certainly be a fight between the Shoe and Live! for the mid-Maryland area. Live! has, well, Arundel Mills - a glorified mall. Also, as the harbor area revitalizes, that will bring more people to the area. Baltimore has to pro teams that draw people to the harbor area which will generate foot traffic to the casino. I think they will take market share away from Live! because they are located in Baltimore. it is also directly off of I-95 and a bit easier to get to than Arundel Mills. Of course Maryland Live has no hotel, but the investment in that facility wasn't nearly as much as what MGM is investing.īetween the Shoe and Live! the Shoe has the better location. Therefore, I think the experience will be better at MGM. Usually a casino resort is 50% hotel and 50% everything else, but MGM decided to focus 70% on the rest of the facility by having a smaller hotel as so not to compete with the numerous hotel rooms at NH. $1.2 billion on a facility that has a small hotel is telling how much attention was given to the rest of the facility. MGM went all out on the National Harbor casino. People coming to the Washington Region would more likely go to MGM because of familiarity than they would Arundel Mills or the Horseshoe in Baltimore. MGM has a worldwide brand along with worldwide patrons. MGM is located by one of the largest convention centers on the east coast. DC's tourist dollars are larger than Baltimore's and certainly more than Arundel Mills. It is in a suburb of one of the wealthiest metros in the country and one of the most visited.
